PocketGrandmaster boasts a fully configurable chess board, simple yet far-reaching functions to work with game databases, various levels, a chessclock, an analysis mode for tutoring and problem solving, and even hints to help improve your gameplay!
PocketGrandmaster allows to play real people over the internet on the two popular chess servers ICS and FICS and lets you select between a variety of preconfigured levels for both tournament and blitz games.
PocketGrandmaster features three extremely strong chess engines with an openingbook of 200,000 moves, and plays interesting and often aggressive chess. The engine is a successor to the program finishing 4th in the World Microcomputer Chess Championships 2001, winning the title of the 18th World Microcomputer Amateur Chess Champion.

Great Chess game. I'm not a very good chess player, so I can't comment on the power of the chess engine. If it had a more "newbie" friendly difficulty selector I'd have given it 5 stars no problem. Other than that one little complaint, it's got way more than any average chess player would ever need in a chess game. I especially like the training feature - essentially a bunch of chess puzzles; some hypothetical, most taken from actual historical games.

Gromit (Pocketgrandmaster) für PocketPC ist der ultimative Reiseschachcomputer. Alle auf dem Markt befindlichen Schachprogramme für PPCs haben diverse Schwächen. Aber offensichtlich wurde mein Flehen (und das vieler PocketPC Besitzer in meinem Verein) erhört. Die Macher vom Gromit (aktueller Amateurweltmeister) haben Ihr Programm für den PocketPC konvertiert. Das Programm hat alle Funktionen, die man sich wünschen kann und die für ein professionelles Produkt Standard sein sollten: Autosave bei Verlassen, einstellbare Hashtables, frei wählbare Farben, sehr übersichtliches Display mit Einblick in den Rechenvorgang, sehr umfangreiche Datenbankfunktionen, frei wählbares Eröffnungsbuch (ein sehr gutes Buch mit 200.000 Zügen ist als kostenloser Download auf der Homepage www.pocketgrandmaster.com verfügbar) und und und. Natürlich sind die Bedienung und die Features eines Schachprogrammes wichtig aber was ist mit der Spielstärke? Ich selbst habe mit meinen ca. 2.100 Elos keine Chance gegen PG auf meinem iPaq 3870! Gromit überzeugt durch ein sehr lebendiges und abwechslungsreiches Spiel ohne erkennbare typische Schwächen. Um eine bessere Vergleichbarkeit zu erreichen, habe ich noch PG dem BT2450 Test unterzogen. Einstellungen 4 MB HT. Ergebnis: 2.261 Elo Punkte! Zum Vergleich: PocketFritz 2.326 Punkte, ChessGenius 2.152 Punkte! Im praktischen Spiel (eine Stunde pro Seite / Spiel) PG Fritz: 4,5 5,5! PG Genius: 7 3! Zusammenfassend: für 25 Euro (halb so teuer wie z.B. PocketFritz) inkl. vieler Funktionen, hoher Spielstärke und kostenloser Updates gibt es nicht mehr Schach fürs Geld für den PPC! Auch für jeden Besitzer von Fritz oder Genius ist PG ein absolutes must have für den mobilen Schachcomputer! PS: Nein, ich bekomme nichts für die Werbung - ich bin einfach nur sehr angetan von diesem wirklich gelungenen Erstlingswerk!

Currently the best combination of features and a strong engine. It offers some database functions I couldn't find in any other chessprogram so far and even allows to filter and search for games in a database. The one-tap-logic to enter moves was a bit surprising at first but once I got used to it I never wanted to switch it off again. I also liked the "highlight last move" feature, which does not only highlight the squares of the last move, but draws a nice arrow on the board. The only feature I miss are fully configurable colors (there are only five preconfigured color sets for the chessboard), but still PocketGrandmaster is very good value for your money.
