For the first time, the definitive Mah-Jongg has come to the Pocket PC. Shanghai Pocket Essentials is a modern, solitaire version of the same named ancient oriental game, based on Activision's Shanghai Mah-Jongg series. Now LandWare has brought the graphics and play options to the handheld platform.

Built on a custom engine using standard Activision graphics and layouts, the handheld version brings desktop game performance to your handheld. You can even create your own layouts, up to five levels deep, right on your handheld and share them with your friends.

Now includes ELEVEN tile sets including the new Monster tile set:

Optimized for he handheld platform, original Activision Graphics and a custom engine built by LandWare makes for hours of tile-matching fun.

Over 100 Shanghai Layouts
Choose from over 100 of Activision's standard Shanghai layouts categorized in six groups: Kid Layouts, Quickies Advanced, Quickies Normal, Standard Advanced, Standard Easy, and Standard Normal. Choose one to play or have the program automatically randomly pick.

Built-in Layout Editor
Want to spin your own layout? You can with the built-in layout editor. Start from scratch or copy one of the built-in standard layouts to get a running start. Tiles can be easily added or removed from the playing field with a tap of the stylus. Organize your custom layouts into collections which can be shared with other Shanghai users. The play field can be a maximum of 9 tiles wide by 8 tall. In addition, tiles may be stacked 5 high.

Record Your Best Scores
When all the tiles are removed, your score is automatically recorded. The time, play mode and layout are all recorded so that you can keep a record of your best scores.

Two Levels of Difficulty
Each tile set contains 36 unique tiles which may be repeated up to 4 times each. For an easer game, you may instead choose to use only 24 unique tiles per game.

Four Play Modes
Choose from one of four play modes:

Shanghai: Remove pairs of tiles that are free to the slide left or right.
Path 2D: Remove tile pairs that can be connected by a line with two or fewer turns. Tiles must be on the same level.
Path 3D: Remove tile pairs that can be connected by a line with two or fewer turns. Tiles may be on different levels.
Contemplation: For a challenge, the tiles are area all face down. Tap to turn each tile over. Matching tiles are removed.

If you have some memory to spare, a Complete installation will install 8 additional tile sets as well as music to enhance game play.

I first purchased Shanghai Mahjong for my Jornada 548. I then purchased a T-Mobile because of the phone. I had Shanghai installed but as I starting running out of memory I slowly deleted one program after the other. I now have an imate with 128MB RAM and a 256 MB SDCard so now I can reinstall my favorites without worrying about memory. I am an avid lover of Word Games so I played BookWorm (another addictive game)while I was deciding on what new PPC I wanted with the most memory. I reinstalled Shanghai Mahjong the other day and can't pull myself away from it. I agree with all the previous comments. There isn't another game out there costing more or FREE that will get you hooked like Shanghai.

WARNING: Do not play this game on any day that requires responsible behavior, like going to work, taking care of kids or even sleeping. Once the game appears on your screen, you will burn countless hours that seem like minutes while you play this intoxicating little game!My biggest gripe with handheld versions of Mahjong is that you almost need the Hubble Telescope to view the tiles so you can play the game. I previewed 4 other Mahjong games before I found this one, with problems abound for all of the previous 4. If they did even manage to install properly, 2 brands of the game crashed my iPAQ after only 10 - 20 minutes of play. In all 4 previous trial samplings, the tiles were either too microscopic to play the game for more than a few minutes without becoming totally frustrated, or the background field and tiles were equally color-intense or wrapped in dark 3D drop-shadows, making it difficult to play the game without eye strain.Shanghai Pocket Mah-Jongg installed easily and is a very stable app. The interface is intuitive and the documentation is concise and easy to reference. It is very responsive to user interaction. tap once to select and deselect tiles with immediate results. Responsiveness is something we all take for granted with software, but it is greatly appreciated after having to tap continuously and much harder on the screen of the handheld, just to get the tiles to work in sync in the inferior brands!The two levels of difficulty give the novice an opportunity to get comfortable with the simpler version of the game. Then, after a few hours, you're ready to take off the training wheels and have at it in the regular version. As the old adage goes: 'You get what you pay for.' The free mobile mahjong games are worthless and difficult to install and uninstall, so don't even bother with them! The under $7.00 varieties I also sampled were not much better. Considering that good desktop games computer games cost anywhere from $50 - $150 a pop, you get every penny of value from your $14.95 for Shanghai Pocket MahJongg.Stop the presses. Hold all my calls. It's time for me to get my daily Shanghai Mahjongg fix.;)Ciao!Kat

This game certainly sets high standards for Pocket versions of Shanghai/Mahjong for others to follow. All the tile sets are very well done and beautiful looking. The graphics are light years ahead and the animation of matching tiles floating away or first floating together to show a matching set in the math, animals, and spelling tile sets, then floating away is very cool. The things really I like are: (and this one is a biggy) being able to reshuffle the tiles when the game has no more moves. With other Shanghai/Mahjong games Ive had before, the game is over when the last possible match is made, and then you get to start all over again from scratch. The status bar at the top is handy too how many moves are left, how many tiles are remaining, etc. If you download the bonus pack, youll never get bored with all the tile sets and endless number of tile layouts. Dont be alarmed at the big download its installer just covers all Pocket PC versions. On my Jornada 568, the entire installed game including the bonus pack takes up only 2.4 megabytes. Speaking of the bonus pack - if you dont see the extra tile sets after installing it, thats because it all ended up in a separate folder. Just open your desktop Explorer while the unit is cradled, and move ALL of the files in the bonus pack folder to the \LandWare Shanghai\ folder.
